Railway fans have launched a £40,000 fundraising appeal to see a Victorian steam locomotive hauling passenger carriages for the first time in 75 years.
Two charities have received cheques from Govia Thameslink Railway for over £12,500 each, raised as part of an event marking the retirement of the Southern fleet of Class 313 trains.

This morning, Flying Scotsman hauled the Royal Train into Pickering Heritage Railway Station as part of its centenary tour of the UK and to mark 50 years of North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Inside the motive power depot at Bridgnorth, SVR engineers maintain, overhaul and restore the railway’s steam locomotives. Usually, it all happens behind closed doors, but on selected weekends in June and July, that’s set to change.
Enthusiast Holidays can trace its origins back to 1975, as the “Magic of Steam in Poland” – part of the émigré Polish travel organization “Fregata” – running trips to that country at a time when photographing trains, or even writing down their numbers, without the necessary permission – could get you arrested!
