Welshpool & Llanfair Countess in collision with car at Cyfronydd

AN INVESTIGATION into a level crossing collision on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway involving original Beyer Peacock 0-6-0T No. 823 Countess and a car is underway.

The collision occurred 11.50am on Thursday, April 5, on the level crossing at Cyfronydd station.

The driver of the red Chevrolet Spark – a local man in his sixties, the 77 passengers on board and the train crew were unhurt. The car was badly damaged and there was also damage to the locomotive.

Dyfed-Powys Police were called and train services were cancelled for the rest of the day, while the stock in the incident was returned to Llanfair Caereinion. The road near the station was closed for three hours.

The railway started its own investigation after informing the Rail Accident Investigation Branch. The railway has declined to make any further comment while the investigation is underway.

Cyfronydd is a halt where trains pass each other when a two train service is operating. Passengers are able to alight and photograph the other locomotive.
