The record-breaking Epping & Ongar Railway June steam gala saw four engines in steam, operating a two-train service.

The change in status of the Ongar branch – from the bucolic Great Eastern Railway branch line of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, to its wavering fortunes before and after the Second World War – is worthy of note, for the continuing story of the Epping and Ongar Railway owes much of its recent history to the 1930s London Passenger Transport Board, which in its day was very much the precursor of the 21st century overground, and overseeing of the Transport for London of today.
