20 steam railways to ride between Christmas & New Year

Following the excitement of the Santa trains in the weeks up to December 25, a good number of our heritage lines are operating post-Christmas trains – be it mince pie specials, enthusiast events or regular services.

The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways will be operating this week. Ffestiniog trains are running on December 26-31, while Welsh Highland services are operating December 27-31. Prince and Taliesin take on water at Blaenau Ffestiniog on December 30, 2014. Last year’s post-Christmas trains operated in snow – will we see the ‘white stuff’ on the ground this year? GARETH EVANS

Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways

December 26-31: regular trains

A memorable ride through beautiful Snowdonia countryside. Enjoy a drink and a bite to eat in the rateable Spooner’s bar & restaurant at Porthmadog Harbour station. Ffestiniog trains are running on December 26-31, while Welsh Highland services are operating December 27-31.

Severn Valley Railway

December 26-31: Festive Season Service

As well as a lovely train ride, stop off at Highley to visit the Engine House, sample the festive real ales in the line’s pubs, The King & Castle in Kidderminster and The Railwayman’s Arms at Bridgnorth. Don’t forget to visit the ‘massive’ book sale & photography fair at the free-to-enter Kidderminster Railway Museum.

Nene Valley Railway

December 29-30: Tornado Winter Warmer Mince Pie Specials

A chance to enjoy a ride behind the famous A1 No. 60163 Tornado on a friendly heritage line.

West Somerset Railway

Regular services on December 27, 28 and 31 – ‘Winter Steam Festival’ gala on December 29-30.

Talyllyn Railway

December 26-31: Mince Pie Specials.

Enjoy an atmospheric round trip in the comfort of a heated carriage, complete with festive decorations. A complimentary mince pie and mulled wine will be served at Tywyn Wharf station.

Churnet Valley Railway

December 27, 30, 31: Winter Warmers.

Enjoy a 20-mile return journey through Staffordshire’s hidden valley, before venturing onto the steeply graded Cauldon Branch with its contrasting moorland scenery.

Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

December 26-31: Mince Pie Specials

Relax on this delightful line with free mince pies and an on-train real ale bar serving, not just real ale, but wines, spirits and hot cups of tea and coffee.

North Norfolk Railway

December 26-31: Mince Pie Specials

Take in the delightful coastal views in the winter light on this friendly line. Mince pie and a glass of sherry for all adults with a rover ticket.

Lynton & Barnstaple Railway

December 29-31: Mince Pie Specials

Enjoy a relaxing trip back in time in one the beautifully restored original L&B vintage railway carriages. Sample the rateable tea room at Woody Bay station.

Llangollen Railway

December 26-27: Mince Pie Specials

Adults receive a mince pie and a tipple and children can enjoy a treat and a drink on the journey between Llangollen & Carrog – the line to Corwen is currently being worked on as part of the extension.

Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway

December 30-31: Black Bun Specials.

Complimentary traditional Scottish Hogmanay Black Bun and a hot drink while travelling.

Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

December 26-31: Regular services – but ‘Christmas Cracker’ gala on December 29-30.

East Lancashire Railway

December 26 plus 29-30: Steam and DMU Mince Pie Specials on December 26. Steam and diesel-hauled trains will operate over the weekend of December 29-30.

South Devon Railway

December 26-31: Regular service on Boxing Day. Mince Pie Specials from December 27.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

December 27-31: Regular services between Grosmont and Pickering. Services to Whitby are also operating.

Leighton Buzzard Railway

December 28-29: Mince Pie Specials.

Enjoy a festive steam train ride and the seasonal refreshments on a delightful 2ft gauge line in Bedfordshire.

Chinnor & Princess Risborough Railway

December 29-31: Mince Pie Specials.

Two children can travel for £1 each when accompanied by another fare-paying adult or senior.

Apedale Valley Light Railway

December 29: Mince Pie Specials.

Diesel trains from 1130 to 4pm on this friendly 2ft gauge line in the Potteries. Standard fares apply.

Epping Ongar Railway

December 28-31: Mince Pie Specials.

Trains will be hauled by visiting BR 4MT No. 80078 and Class 31 diesel No. 31438. Standard fares apply offering unlimited travel on the trains and connecting vintage buses all day.
