Standard 2 visits Great Central (Nottingham) for Christmas

BR 2MT 2-6-0 No. 78019 worked its first passenger trains at the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) over the weekend of December 15-16.

BR Standard Class 2 No. 78019 is visiting the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) from its usual haunts on the neighbouring Loughborough – Leicester North line, where it is seen at the head of a freight train. BRIAN SHARPE

The locomotive is visiting Ruddington and will haul Santa trains on December 22-24, plus the line’s post-Christmas Winter Holiday trains on December 27-30.

The GCR (N) said: “Thanks to our counterparts at GCR Plc, the Loughborough Standard Locomotive Group and the Darlington Railway Preservation Society, BR Standard Class 2 No. 78019 will be joining us at Ruddington for the first time.”

History

Built in March 1954 and withdrawn from service in November 1966, the 2MT spent many years at Barry scrapyard before being rescued by the Darlington Railway Preservation Society (DRPS) in 1981. After a 34-year restoration effort by the DRPS, the locomotive was then transferred to the Great Central Railway in 2012, where the remainder of the work was carried out.The locomotive returned to action at the GCR in October 2016.
