Saphos Trains has been putting D213 Andania to good use – with further tours to follow in the coming weeks. As reported in our last issue, the Class 40 recently returned to the main line.
On August 27, the locomotive operated the ‘Cumbrian Mountain Whistler’, which ran from Crewe to Carlisle and return via the Settle and Carlisle line.
It will haul the ‘Yorkshire Coast Merrymaker’ to Scarborough on Saturday, October 6. Starting at Crewe, after picking up at Warrington Bank Quay, it will head to Scarborough via Miles Platting bank and the seven-mile climb to Diggle, with its 1-in-135 gradient and the three-mile tunnel at the summit. The tour will return via Hebden Bridge, Burnley and Wigan.

The English Electric will head along the North Wales main line on Saturday, October 13, when it hauls ‘The North Wales Coast Forty’ from Crewe to Holyhead. The tour includes an out and back run on the Conwy Valley branch, returning after a 20-minute turnaround at Blaenau Ffestiniog. The train then crosses the Menai to Anglesey, where it continues to Holyhead.
