A NEW project to re-create a long-lost Welsh Highland Railway locomotive is set to be launched.
Single Fairlie 0-6-4T Gowrie was built by Hunslet in 1908 for the WHR’s predecessor, the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway, but is believed to have been scrapped in or around 1928.
A group of engineers want to build a replica from scratch, but, unlike the original locomotive, will have it fitted with both air and vacuum brakes, so it can run on both heritage era Welsh Highland lines as well as visiting others.

The construction will be handled by the team of volunteers that restored Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST Edward Sholto, the Moseley Railway Trust’s Hudswell Clarke G class 0-6-0WT No. 1238 – which spent 43 years rotting in a river in Ghana, and who are currently completing the restoration of repatriated ROD Hunslet 4-6-0 No. 1215 of 1916.
The Gowrie project is due to be officially launched at the group’s combined model railway show and fundraising event “Mainly Narrow Gauge”, being held at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester on April 28, at which interested parties will have the opportunity to meet the project team and learn how to get involved and contribute.
