Wissington heads for the Lincolnshire Wolds

THE special guest locomotive at the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway in the spring will be Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST Wissington.

Appearing at Ludborough courtesy of owner the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society, Wissington will be operating on April 30, May 1, 14, and 28-29.

Wissington was built in 1938 by Hudswell Clarke of Leeds for the newly-formed British Sugar Corporation.

It was delivered to BSC’s Wissington plant in Norfolk which had a sprawling light railway used to connect farms in a remote area of the Norfolk fens.

Wissington remained at the plant for virtually of all its working career. With the arrival of diesel shunters and a reduction in rail traffic, Wissington was relegated to being a spare and in the early 1970s it fell out of use but remained in storage.

By 1978 Wissington had become the last steam locomotive in commercial ownership in East Anglia.

The BSC donated Wissington to society and it departed for a new life on the North Norfolk Railway at Sheringham.
