The future of the works, operating continuously since 1838, has been mired in uncertainty following owner and property developer St Modwen’s announcement of its ‘redevelopment’ plans on September 4, 2014.

The outline planning application for the scheme was lodged on August 6, 2015 with the following wording: “Demolition of all existing structures (except part of the lifting shop building and the brick wall on Stratford Road, which are partially demolished) and development to create a new employment floorspace.”
