On special event days train rides are available, pulled by either a steam or diesel locomotive from Roundhouse Halt, a purpose-built platform. Trains travel around the depot and up the Springwell branch.

Trade stands and catering all go together to create a great day out. Visitors by the thousand now make Barrow Hill’s special events regular dates in their diary.

Barrow Hill is also home to the Deltic Preservation Society’s maintenance depot and museum, adjacent to the roundhouse. The Deltic Preservation Society’s depot is open on Saturdays 10am-4pm, and during some of Barrow Hill’s special events.

Friday, Sept 22 to Sunday, Sept 24

In just a few weeks Barrow Hill Roundhouse will host its grand reopening following the completion of the venue’s £1.2 million Heritage Lottery (HLF) funded restoration project.

The highlight of a four day celebration at the Grade II listed roundhouse complex will be the visit of icons of steam – The NRM’s A3 60103 Flying Scotsman and A1 60163 Tornado.

This will be the first visit to the Roundhouse by Flying Scotsman since a BR Open Day in 1974. Although 60103 has been seen in Derbyshire since the completion of its overhaul in 2016, this will be the first opportunity for many in the region to get up close to the locomotive alongside its sister East Coast racehorse Tornado, seen against the unique and authentic backdrop of the roundhouse.

The celebration is taking place from Friday, September 22 to Sunday, September 24

During the day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the roundhouse will open its doors to the general public for a truly special steam gala with visitors able to see for the first time the comprehensive but sympathetic HLF-funded restoration.
