Ten of the best for South Devon

THE South Devon Railway has won the Heritage Railway Association Interpretation Award – bringing to 10 the total honours won by the Buckfastleigh line in 2016.

The award, sponsored by Heritage Railway magazine, is to be presented to the railway for the completion of a new – yet authentic – GWR country station at Totnes Riverside, using genuine components from closed stations elsewhere, and thereby providing two meaningful destinations for its services, in the form of Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and the town itself.

The station, like the rare breeds farm that it serves, was built on the site on a muddy field, after it was decided that it was too costly and problematic to run heritage services into the main line station at Totnes.

As highlighted in issue 200, over the past 25 years, components from closed GWR stations elsewhere have been added – the station building from Toller, the corrugated iron stores hut from Bovey Tracey, the platform canopy
came from Axbridge and the water column came from Leominster. The final piece in the jigsaw came this year when the former Cradley Heath signalbox
was commissioned.
