NETWORK Rail chairman Sir Peter Hendy has cut the first sod of the Helston Railway’s short extension and new platform at Trevarno Farm.
Nearly 135 years ago, in March 1882, the then mayor of Helston inaugurated work on the proposed railway between Helston and Gwinear Road by cutting the first sod.
On Thursday, September 1, the current mayor, Coun Gillian Geer and Mrs Elizabeth Bolitho, some of whose ancestors were directors of the original railway, attended as the former Commissioner for Transport for London officiated at a similar ceremony to launch a short extension.

The event somewhat invoked parallels with the opening of the Dart Valley Railway, now the South Devon Railway, by the former British Railways chairman Dr Richard Beeching on May 5, 1969.
