The Loch Lomond Steamship Company has marked the 65th anniversary of the launch of the last paddle steamer to be built for a British railway company, by announcing the appointment of Lord Robert Smith of Kelvin KT CH as patron of the appeal to raise the last £1 million needed to get Maid of the Loch steaming again.
Highly-respected Lord Smith, who sits on several industrial boards in Scotland, is no stranger to transport heritage. He headed the successful Riverside Museum Appeal to raise an extra £5 million for Glasgow’s new transport museum before it opened.
He also played a key role in bringing South African Railways 15F 4-8-2 No. 3007 home to Glasgow where it was built by the North British Locomotive Company, for display in the new museum.

Lord Smith said: “I am delighted with my latest role as patron of Maid of the Loch. The Loch Lomond Steamship Company has worked hard to raise funds and just needs a final push to raise the last £1m to get the ship fully refurbished and sailing again.”
