Builders start work bridging that gap!

AFTER decades of speculation, wishful thinking and hard fundraising, what is widely considered to be the biggest obstacle in the heritage railway sector is now being removed.

In March, building work began on the bridge which will link the two heritage era Great Central railways at Loughborough.

Contractors have been preparing the ground for the footings of the new bridge over the Midland Main Line at Loughborough.

The work will then move off site as metal is cut and prefabricated sections of concrete are prepared.

The 100ft bridge itself will be craned into place in late summer, with the installation of the structure completed by early autumn. Eventually track will be laid across it to join the Great Central Railway and its northern counterpart the Great Central Railway (Nottingham), creating a unique 18-mile inter-city heritage trunk railway.

Great Central Railway chief executive Andy Munro said: “Our supporters have waited a long time to see the Victorian link between the two lines restored.
