Best of Scottish railway design on show at Dundee V&A

RAILWAY design has not been forgotten at the newly-opened £80 million V&A Dundee gallery of design history thanks to exhibits within the iconic building’s Scottish Design Galleries.

**The original Tay Bridge before disaster struck in 1879.**

Appropriately for Dundee, there are engineering drawings for building the replacement and present day Tay Bridge, as well as a picture of the original ill-fated structure before its collapse in high winds on December 28, 1879.

The gallery points out that Thomas Bouch’s flawed design was regarded as a design classic before its high girders failed, taking a train into the stormy Tay with them.
