Borehole ‘first’ at Corwen Central!

LLANGOLLEN Railway volunteers have prepared the way for what may be a heritage sector ‘first’ – a borehole to supply water for steam locomotives.

The site for the borehole lies in Corwen Common, below the railway embankment at the line’s new Corwen Central terminus.

It is intended to use water extracted from the borehole to supply the water to replenish steam locomotives during their run round at the island platform.

With extraction of water from the nearby River Dee not an option and connection to the town’s water supply too expensive, the project team has looked at the alternative sources.

Thanks to advice from a retired professional hydro-geologist and volunteer member of the project, the prospect for tapping into the high water table below the ground level has been instrumental in promoting the idea of a borehole scheme.

A contract has been drawn up with Dragon Drilling of Corwen to install a borehole to a depth of 82ft with all necessary piping, pump and controls to provide water to the eventual installation of the new build parachute water tower.

The first phase of this project will begin in January. Meanwhile, track has been laid alongside the site of platform 2 at Corwen Central .
