Expats join tragedy loco and A4 in Stoneleigh selection

by

Two expat Southern Railway nameplates, another from a tragic LMS 4-6-0 that was involved in the country’s worst-ever peacetime rail disaster, and a fourth from a Gresley LNER A4 Pacific, will be at the core of Great Central Railwayana’s auction on December 1.

The SR plates are Cunard White Star from Merchant Navy Pacific No. 35004 and Dorchester from West Country No. 34042, the LMS example Windward Islands from Jubilee class No. 45637 that was one of four locomotives involved in a horrifying rail crash at Harrow and Wealdstone station in 1952, and the LNER representative Andrew K. McCosh from No. 60003.

No. 35004 was built at Eastleigh as No. 21C4 in October 1941, the year the first six in the class entered traffic, and was withdrawn in October 1965, while No. 34042 was built at Brighton in October 1946 numbered 21C142 and was withdrawn in October 1965.

Both nameplates are from a collection in Canada, and that from the WC loco comes with its Dorchester coat-of-arms.

Windward Islands is from a Crewe, December 1934-built Jubilee which was the lead engine double-heading a Down Liverpool express with Princess Royal Pacific No. 46202 Princess Anne when it was involved in the accident on October 8, 1952, ripping Harrow & Wealdstone station apart, resulting in the deaths of 112 people and injuries to 340.
