Appeal for Great Central Railway’s canal bridge reaches £250k

The Great Central Railway’s nationwide appeal for funds to repair a Victorian cast iron bridge over the Grand Union Canal as part of its plans to create an 18-mile inter-city heritage line has raised more than £250,000.

An essential part of the project to link the GCR to its northern sister, the Great Central Railway (Nottingham), restoration work on the bridge just north of Loughborough shed will go ahead over the coming months.

GCR managing director Michael Gough said: “We are grateful to everyone who continues to respond to our appeal. During our national campaign we attracted many new donors from across the UK, but it is extremely humbling to still be receiving donations from the railway’s friends in the community.”

The work on the bridge needs to take place in the winter months to avoid major disruption to pleasure boat traffic on the canal. However, no date has yet been set for the work to begin, while arrangements with contractors are concluded.
