Crowds flocked to Beamish Museum for its April 7-10 Great War Steam Fair – but the real showstopper for many railway enthusiasts was the first public appearance of Britain’s newest steam locomotive.

The Beamish narrow gauge lines became a hive of military and mining activity during the Great War Steam Fair.
The museum’s replica of Stephen Lewin 0-4-0WTG Samson was unveiled to the public in light steam with its flywheel turning over for the first time during the hugely successful event, which recreated the roads and railways of the home front during the First World War, including military vehicles, around 20 road steam vehicles, lorries, cars and traction engines.
