Spring diesel gala breaks all records

THE Severn Valley Railway’s spring diesel gala held over May 19-21, was arguably the biggest and most extensive event of its kind held in the heritage era.

With 16 visiting locomotives, along with the railway’s extensive home fleet, there were almost too many locomotives to fit into the gala timetable, creating a cornucopia of diesel traction for the bumper crowd of more than 4000 enthusiasts who turned out.

The event was moved from its usual October slot to May and this coincided with the opening of the SVR’s new £600,000 diesel maintenance depot on the Friday.
