Best year yet for new-build Patriot

by

THE LMS-Patriot project is celebrating its most successful fundraising year, with just over £427,000 donated between April 2016 and March.

RAF Vulcan pilot Kev Rumens, who last flew one of the bombers, XH558, over the Great Central Railway over October 20, 2015 during an autumn gala when he swooped over Swithland Reservoir, had his feet firmly on the ground when he visited the line on April 15 during the Easter Vintage Festival in Loughborough. For his visit, BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0 No. 78018 carried a special ‘Vulcan Express’ headboard and he took a footplate ride to Leicester Central. GCR

The construction of the boiler of 4-6-0 No. 5551 The Unknown Warrior at LNWR Heritage in Crewe continues with assembly of the outer firebox due to start. It is the first large brand new boiler to be built in the UK since 1962 and it will be one of the biggest milestones for the project.

Both the bottom end of the locomotive and the tender chassis are being worked on at the Llangollen Railway. The main activity has been the trial fitting of the brake gear with the sanding gear to follow. The main driving wheel springs have also been fitted.

Work on the tender chassis has recently included the lining up and mounting of the new mainframe plates, including drilling all the rivet holes. So far approximately £15,000 of the estimated £50,000 needed to complete the tender has been raised via the dedicated Tenner for the Tender appeal.

Anyone wishing to help by donating to this appeal is invited to call 01785 224156 or visiting http://lms-patriot.org.uk or http://lms-patriot.org.uk/sponsorship
