When Standard 3MTs were replaced by DMUs
By: Web Editor
Further to the article 'Tank Gang' in issue 137 concerning the green-painted BR Standard 3MT 2-6-2T of the 82000 series, I enclose a photograph of No 82020 in such livery, which I took at Bidston MPD (6F) coaling plant in April 1959.
The first passenger boards the 1000th DMU built at Derby after it prepares to make its debut on the New Brighton to Wrexham Exchange on 4 January 1960. JOHN DYER
This locomotive was used on passenger services between Seacombe and Wrexham Exchange which ended on 3 January 1960, when Seacombe station was closed.
As from 4 January 1960 the service was operated by DMU starting from New Brighton. (Both Seacombe and New Brighton are in the town of Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsula).
I had the honour to be the first passenger on the then new DMU service and also enclose a photo of that occasion, with the stationmaster congratulating me, and the driver alongside me.
The DMU used was the 1000th built at Derby. The cutting into Seacombe station became the approach road to the entrance.
