The last GWR engine in BR service?
By: Web Editor
In issue 152, Chris Magner asked whether 0-6-0PT No. 4646 was the last GWR locomotive to work for BR.
I have cross-referenced several books, namely British Railways Vol 1. Ex-GWR 1948-68 by Michael McManus, Part 1 Western Region by Jim Grindlay; GWR Loco Allocations by J W P Rowledge and Shed by Shed Part 6 by Tony Walmsley.
J W P Rowledge states that record books fell out of use after 1963 with the result that sub-sheds are not shown, maybe the facts were not kept either.
Grindley, Rowledge and Walmsley all agree on withdrawal dates of November 1966 for Nos. 4646, 4696 and 9774, and December 1966 for No. 9641. However, McManus quotes December 3, 1966 for Nos. 4646, 4696 and 9774 and November 6, 1966 for No. 9641 (roughly one month later in each case), so have different records been used or interpreted in a different way?
In Tony Walmsley’s book where he lists locomotive allocations by shed and date,
No. 4646 does not appear in the list. The latest GWR locomotive is No. 9641 (withdrawn October 1966) all other locomotives after that date were BR Standard designs.
I am afraid this does not answer his question, has someone made a mistake, or did No. 4646 get transferred there in its very last days but still remain on Tyseley’s accounts?
