LNWR Coal Tank returns for steam gala

LNWR Coal Tank No. 1054 was built in 1888 and saw service in many parts of the country before being withdrawn in 1958.

Now owned by the National Trust but in the care of the Ingrow-based Bahamas Locomotive Society since 1973, the locomotive recently re-entered service at the KWVR following a major overhaul. 

KWVR spokesman Kieran Pilsworth commented: “These locomotives were commonly known as ‘Coal Tanks’ as they were the tank engine equivalent of the bigger engines used on heavy coal trains. Its return to service has created considerable interest and we expect to welcome visitors from all over the country, particularly as it will be running in BR livery for the first time”.

Joining the Coal Tank will be ‘Super D’ No. 49395, a large goods locomotive built in 1921 for the LNWR.

Part of the National Collection, this locomotive was restored by rail enthusiast and top music producer Pete Waterman and it is anticipated that he will make a guest appearance over the weekend.

Other steam locomotives in use over the Gala weekend will be BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T No. 80002, BR Ivatt tank No. 41241, BR Class 4F No. 43924, Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway No. 957 (‘The Green Dragon’ in The Railway Children film), and Hudswell Clarke No. 1704 Nunlow.

The Gala will also feature vintage buses, demonstration goods trains, vintage carriages, behind the scenes tours, real ale bars, and great value weekend tickets.
