Last word on the last pannier?
By: Web Editor
MANY thanks indeed for running the story of the last standard gauge GWR locomotive to work for BR. We are nearly at the end of the story.
Steve Leyland, who kept a record of steam locomotives in 1966, observed No. 4646 shunting at Croes Newydd, Wrexham, on Saturday, November 12, 1966. No. 9641 was in steam on shed.
The RCTS Railway Observer magazine stated in January 1967 that the GWR era at Croes Newydd came to an end on Saturday, November 26, 1966 when No. 9641 came on shed having worked the Minera goods.
No. 4646 complete with 6C shedplate finished work the previous week leaving No. 9641 to be the very last.
Unless any reader has information to the contrary, the ‘Tyseley Three’ Nos. 4646/96/ 9774 were not as stated in many publications the last GWR locomotives to work for BR, but the honour must go to Croes Newydd MPD and No. 9641.
