In reply to Mick Yarker in issue 162, the LNER had serious problems with frame cracking of the Gresley A1s, so much so that all the A1s and some A3s had new frames fitted.

As part of the electrification of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway an old lattice footbridge known locally as the 77 Steps has recently been replaced with a London Midland-type footbridge.

New builds are meaningless

I FULLY agree with Mr Wilby’s comments in issue 160; we should be preserving what we have and not keep having all this new-build. I am sick of having to keep reading about them. I want to see the old locomotives restored; the new-builds do not mean anything to me.

DURING the 1950s, my grandfather, who was a permanent way ganger on the Midland in Leicester, would tell his wide-eyed grandson about ‘his’ railway, and at one time he spoke of the ‘Starlight Expresses’.
