Win a London 1948 Olympics train set
As well as the return of steam to the Epping Ongar Railway this summer, and hopefully the reconnection of the Bluebell Railway to East Grinstead and a direct rail link to the capital, there will be another event in the city this summer, last held there in the steam age. The Olympic Games.
Hornby has secured the rights to produce a range of merchandise for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Three limited edition train sets have been produced. The first, representing the 1908 Olympics - the first to be held in London - contains GWR 4-4-0 County of Radnor, a GWR clerestory composite coach and GWR clerestory brake coach.
The second commemorates the 1948 Olympics, the last time the event took place in the United Kingdom. It contains a LNER Class N2 0-6-2T in the then newly applied nationalised British Railways livery, while the teak coaches show their heritage as LNER, still unpainted but with BR numbering applied.
There are parallels with today. While in 2012 we are in the midst of a severe economic downturn, back in 1948 Britain was still reeling from the effects of postwar austerity. Yet the Olympics made the year full of hope and anticipation.
The third features the 2012 Olympics, with a specially livered Hitachi Class 395 Javelin train and a TrakMat featuring some of the venues of the event.
Each set is limited to the number of the year that it represents, and contains a certificate of authenticity. As such, they are set to become much-sought-after collectors' items in the future.
Hornby is also producing a budget-priced model of the Olympic stadium and a series of gift packs containing 50p pieces minted to commemorate each of the different sports within the Games.
Now Heritage Railway readers can get in on the Olympic act... as we are giving readers the chance to win the 1948 Olympics set - which sells for £204.99.
